Għadna Għaddejjin - Peklektru's new album release

'Għadna Għaddejjin', Peklektru's new album, will be released on 5 February. Four lyric-videos from the album have already been released and the album will be available on Bandcamp and on major streaming services.

Recording the drums for this album with David Vella at Temple Studios was a blast, and it was an honour to feature on the songs with Patrick Galea himself and bassist Ivan Borg. The run-up to the album was particularly intriguing as I did my best to articulate a loyal interpretation to Patrick's compositions through my drumming. 

I also play the drums on Peklektru's recent singles 'Mandragreen' (2025) and 'Ejja Sibni' (2023), as well as on his album 'Reclaiming Space' (2007), under his previous moniker Peklectrick. Patrick was also a co-founder of my band Dripht, and we had recorded our first EP together in 2004.

The Real Estateisation of Marsascala?

 Tourism, Real Estate, and Urban Pressures: The case of Marsascala, Malta -  

Paper by Agius Karl, Briguglio Michael and Bermúdez Pérez Jorge Luis -  published in Open Research Europe -  an open access publishing venue for European Commission-funded researchers.

This paper examines the urban transformation of Marsascala, a coastal town in Malta, through the lens of tourism development and its social repercussions. Engaging with Young’s (1983) model of touristization and landscape change, and drawing from qualitative interviews, field observations, orthophoto analysis, and secondary data, the study traces the town’s evolution from a fishing village to a site of intensive tourism consolidation. Findings reveal how population growth—driven by tourism and foreign labour—has led to overdevelopment, infrastructural strain, and a declining quality of life. Building on empirical insights, the authors propose a novel seventh stage in Young’s model: real estateisation, wherein real estate speculation and short-term rentals reconfigure coastal localities beyond tourism. Marsascala thus becomes a case study in understanding the entanglements between tourism, migration, housing, and urban change. The paper contributes to debates on sustainable tourism, the Blue Economy, and the need for integrated social impact assessments in coastal governance.This paper is linked to the EU Cost Action CA221222 Rethinking the Blue Economy: Socio-Ecological Impacts and Opportunities (RethinkBlue), in relation to the themes covered by Working Group 3 - Port cities & coastal communities.

New Publication: Rethinking the Blue Economy: Integrating social science for sustainability and justice

The article argues that to fulfill the Blue Economy’s promise of sustainable and just ocean use, its scientific foundation must more fully integrate the social sciences. Drawing on insights from real-world scientific networking initiatives, we identify three key contributions of the social sciences and propose a strategy to redefine the Blue Economy. This strategy anchors knowledge in societal challenges and emphasizes co-creation, the science-policy interface, knowledge integration, and the values of accountability and care.

Open Access Publication about Protests in the Second Year of Covid-19 - the case of Malta

My latest peer-reviewed publication Protests in the Second Year of covid-19 – the Case of Malta has been published in the academic journal 'Protest' (Brill).

This study analyses protests in Malta during 2021 (N = 94) and compares them to those in 2020 (N = 74). Malta’s protest dynamics are analysed within the theoretical frameworks of political opportunity structures and small-state studies, while also drawing on scholarship on protest and social movements during the covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, the environment was the most prominent issue, followed by Daphne Caruana Galizia and covid-scepticism, respectively. During 2021 there was a spike in protests (mostly sceptical) dealing directly with the Pandemic and its policy ramifications. The most prominent organizers of protest events were Repubblika and their affiliates, especially in relation to Daphne Caruana Galizia, and Moviment Graffitti, primarily on the environment. The demonstration was the most popular type of protest repertoire, but other repertoires were also used. Valletta was the most popular venue for protest events.

My tribute to my mother, Marie Lucia Briguglio, during the launch of the Women's Archive at the University of Malta

Yesterday, the Women's Archive at the University of Malta was launched.

It was a honour and a pleasure to donate the archives of the Muviment Emanċipazzjoni tal-Mara (1974-78 - Women's Emancipation Movement) which my dear and beloved mother Marie Lucia Briguglio had entrusted to me a few months before her passing away. Speaking about my mother during this event was an incredibly moving experience. Gratitude to the organisers of this wonderful initiative.  

The following is my tribute to my mother during the event (translated here in English, with the Maltese version reproduced below it)

My mother, Marie Lucia—later Briguglio—was born in 1946. She was from St Julian’s, and music was deeply woven into her family’s life. They were actively involved in both the import and sale of musical instruments, as well as in live performance.

In the 1960s, she attended College, where she trained as a teacher. It was there that she met my father, Lino. Both were young artists, sharing a passion for creativity. They married in 1969, and soon after, my sister Marie was born in 1970, followed by me in 1975.

By then, my mother co-founded the Muviment Emanċipazzjoni tal-Mara. In the 1970s, being involved in feminism and advocating for women's rights was groundbreaking. I was too young to remember these moments firsthand, but their significance was immense.

In 2021, just a few months before her untimely passing due to an aggressive illness, my mother entrusted me with the archives of the Muviment Emanċipazzjoni tal-Mara. Knowing my own interest in social movements, she asked me to ensure these records were passed on to the University so that researchers in the field could study them. She had meticulously organised the archives herself, with the help of my niece, Lilli.

As I mentioned earlier, I have no personal memory of my mother’s activism within the Movement. However, with profound gratitude and love, I can say that her influence shaped both my sister’s and my everyday life. The values she embodied—the ethics of care, kindness, and justice—are deeply embedded in my own identity. And perhaps the greatest legacy she left me is this: as a father, husband, and citizen, I strive to live by these same principles every day.

Sa dak iż-żmien, ommi kienet waħda mill-fundaturi tal-Muviment Emanċipazzjoni tal-Mara. Fis-snin sebgħin, li tkun involuta fil-feminiżmu u fil-ġlieda għad-drittijiet tan-nisa kienet ħaġa innovattiva u kuraġġuża. Jien kont għadni żgħir wisq biex niftakar dawk il-mumenti, iżda l-impatt tagħhom kien enormi.

Fl-2021, ftit xhur biss qabel ħallietna b’mod traġiku minħabba marda aggressiva, ommi fdatni bl-arkivji tal-Muviment Emanċipazzjoni tal-Mara. Hija kienet taf bl-interess tiegħi fil-movimenti soċjali, u għalhekk talbitni nieħu ħsieb li dawn id-dokumenti jgħaddu għand l-Università, sabiex ikunu jistgħu jiġu studjati mir-riċerkaturi fil-qasam. L-arkivji kienu organizzati b’mod metikoluż minnha stess, bl-għajnuna tan-neputija tiegħi, Lilli.

Kif għedt qabel, jien ma niftakarx personalment l-attiviżmu ta’ ommi fil-Moviment. Madankollu, b’sens profond ta’ gratitudni u mħabba, nista’ ngħid li l-influwenza tagħha ħalliet impatt qawwi fuq ħajti u fuq dik ta’ oħti. Il-valuri li ħaddnet—l-etika tal-kura, il-ġentilezza, u l-ġustizzja—huma mnaqqxa fil-qalba tal-identità tiegħi. Lino Briguglio - No Man Is An Island Book Launch

"The story of the free-thinking, plain-talking, artist, teacher, politician, and world-renowned economist as told by one-hundred or so of his friends, family and colleagues."

Lino Briguglio - No Man is An Island, co-edited by Marie Briguglio and Michael Briguglio, will be launched in the upcoming Malta Book Festival. The book contains over 100 contributions by family, friends, and colleagues.

In this vibrant and colourful publication, many speak of Lino Briguglio as a free-thinker and a plain talker, as a passionate teacher and persevering researcher. Some bear testament to his bitter-sweet experience in politics. Others glimmer with anecdotes of his humour and playfulness, with references to his creativity and art. Together, they portray Lino as the embodiment of joie de vivre.

The book is not only a celebration of Lino, but also of his local and international networks, including the people who have contributed to this publication. In this social construction, his life is interwoven with art, politics, economics, and island studies. It is a journey that spans across eight decades, during which he assumed a plurality of roles.

Most contributions in this book present Lino on the front stage of public life. But there is also the backstage of private life, forged within family life and friendships.

'Lino Briguglio - No Man Is An Island' is published by Kite and book signings will take place at the Book Fair (MFCC, Ta' Qali) on Friday 8 November between 6pm and 8pm, and on Sunday 10 November between 10am and 12pm.
